Ulysses (Bob Odenkirk) is happy to begin work as an interim substitute sheriff in the town of Normal, Minnesota, USA. The original sheriff has died, leaving behind his teenage child Alex. This small town offers quiet and calmness. Here Ulysses can recover from his own personal problems, walking around a beautiful environment, watched over by a moose. Naturally, it’s not all peaceful as “every town has its own little quirks.” There is a bank robbery, a wife is shot during an incident, people drink whiskey together in a truck, a vehicle crashes into a bank, a man’s ear is shot off. And so, on and on, there is more shooting, as well as stabbing. The electricity goes out; there are no lights, but definitely explosions.
This repeats the different actions with never a dull moment. “Life is a lot easier when you care a little less.” But what is the actual plot? There are lots of guns, including many hanging on the wall of the local bar. Some Japanese have an influence. An old lady runs a shop. There is continuous snowfall for the entire ninety minutes. Filmed in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada, although it is to appear as a town of 1500 inhabitants in the USA, it premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival, September 7, 2025. Especially interesting is transgender actor/actress Jess McLeod who plays the role of Alex. (Becky T.)
