The Sternbrücke is a bridge in Hamburg-Altona. The first bridge was built in 1893. The second replaced it in 1926, and now, one hundred years, later, we have a new Sternbrücke. The name translates to Star Bridge, referring to the seven main roads in the form of a star which connect drivers beneath it. The new bridge provoked discussions in the neighborhood bakery, bar, boutique, etc., which were forced to close. One man regrets the loss of his store, originally founded fifty-eight years earlier by his father. Trees were cut down, in order to provide new space. One young woman watches the rise of the new bridge from her window in the top floor of a neighboring building. An American girl from Philadelphia gives her opinion, comparing the work with what she has seen in the US.
The excavator, or Bagger, is an “actor” demolishing the area, while demonstrations, with 200 or more participants, hit the streets. In the film all are accompanied by fun music, e.g., “Here Comes Alex” by Die Toten Hosen. The construction price rose to 173 million euros, 13 million more than originally estimated. Graffiti and posters play a role.
After the film premiere, which was part of the 2026 Filmfest Hamburg, Director Christian Hornung stood on stage, and explained his work, accompanied by twelve more people involved in the creation of this film. He then invited others to come on stage, so that, in the end, we were amazed at the forty-four participants connected to the film. Now, we “Hamburgers” will be eager to go over to the Altona area and view the new “Monster Bridge,” which can join into the making of Hamburg history.” (Becky T)
