The Social Reckoning, the sequel to The Social Network (2010), is a chilling reminder of how one college student's dorm-room project came to corrode society, feeding political corruption and toxic influence on a global scale.
Jeremy Allen White plays Jeff Horwitz, a Wall Street Journal reporter whose analog lifestyle underscores how little the average American understands the algorithms behind social media. Mikey Madison plays Frances Haugen, the Facebook data scientist turned whistleblower who leaks thousands of the company's internal documents. At first, Frances is reluctant. She believes devoutly in Facebook's mission to connect people around the world. A smart, curious, introverted engineer, she is deeply relatable and endearing. I especially enjoyed her resourcefulness when she dresses as if for a date to visit Jeff at his hotel, avoiding attention.
The scene in which Jeremy Strong's stunned Mark Zuckerberg watches the January 6 insurrection unfold from Facebook's "war room," fueled in part by misinformation spreading through Facebook groups, sent chills down my spine, especially as an American expat. Thrilling to watch, the film is also an essential story for understanding how and why our world has become so polarized on every topic. (Emily R-P)
