Every year in New York City there is a special night from 7 p.m. to early
morning, 7 a.m., when unmarried, i.e., premarital, sex is legal. This is an evening event and everyone jumps to seek the right partner. People are all out kissing on the street and meeting in bars and parties. Allie (Monica Barbaro) and Owen (Callum Turner) eventually meet up, but first there are various actions and interferences. Allie wants to find a “Prince.” She plays the piano. She also has to buy condoms and eventually goes home with Max on a motorcycle. Owen brings flowers to his own mother. He vomits. There is a group interacting with them including Sebastian, Tejan, Rick, Andrew, Linda, Skye, the neighbor boy Troy, and singer Ezra.
Presented as a romantic comedy One Night Only is a fun romance, basically due to the excellent members in the cast, all enjoyable, no matter where the plot jumps up and down. The first sentence is “I’m going to sleep with someone else tonight” with participants continuously undressing. The film is supported by thirty-five songs, including “Only You.” I saw the film in English with German subtitles and learned that the German word “kitschig” can be translated to “cheesy.” I also learned the term “dusty dick.” Guess what that is.
