Clark (Chiwetel Ejiofor) lives in his furniture shop, called Captain Clark’s Store, where there are naturally enough beds. He chooses one and sets up a TV next to it. While in the basement of his shop, he manages to go through the wall where he enters many backrooms, a kind of labyrinth, all but one empty. The lights flicker and he checks the electricity. This unusual situation affects his psychological health and he goes to Dr. Mary Kline (Renate Reinsve) for treatment. She accompanies him to the backrooms, where they are surprised to find an inhabitant who looks like Clark, except that he is a “pirate” (Robert Bobroczkyi). Eventually involved in the unusual situation are Clark’s employee Kat (Lukita Maxwell) and her boyfriend Bobby (Finn Bennett). The situation slowly becomes extremely dangerous.
Director Kane Parsons first created a web series about this topic when he was just sixteen years old. He found the topic “Backrooms” on the internet as part of the digital-based genre of horror stories called creepypasta and developed the idea into his own film. Is this the first time that a thriller, horror movie takes us to an environment which, in normal times, would be safe? Ominous music accompanies us as we attempt to understand the action. There is possibly a sequel in sight, which will be helpful as I am still trying to figure out the ending. Filmed in Vancouver, Canada. (Becky T.)
