“Who killed our shepherd?” asked a flock of English sheep. This mystery-comedy film is based on the successful German novel Three Bags Full: A Sheep Detective Story (original German title: Glennkill: Ein Schafskrimi) written by Leonie Swann in 2005. The film begins with a shepherd named George Hardy (Hugh Jackman) living in quaint Denbrook who has a herd of sheep as his closest friends. Every night he reads to them insightful mystery novels where they learn how to solve crimes. The sheep are certainly not your average sheep and from the beginning we learn about their personalities, strengths, and weaknesses, but most of all their connection to their shepherd. (They are voiced and brought to life by prominent actors including: Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Bryan Cranston, Chris O’Dowd, Regina Hall, Patrick Stewart, Bella Ramsey, and Brett Goldstein)
Unfortunately, it doesn’t take long that after a terrible stormy night, George is found murdered with his hands painted in different colors: one green and one blue. What could that mean? So, before you know this detective story takes the form of an Agatha Christie novel, but the detective crew is a flock of sheep. Having this perspective is quite the challenge. How do sheep see the world and what difficulties do they face that we humans don’t have, and what abilities do they have which we don’t? The murder mystery is funny, witty, and full of good old practical advice as each sheep tries to solve the case. They follow the strategy that they learned from having listened to George reading them detective novels and begin to evaluate all the possible suspects. There's Ham, the terrifying butcher; Rebecca, a village newcomer with a secret and a scheme; Gabriel, the shady shepherd of a very odd flock; and Father Will, a sinister priest.
The film is suited for the entire family and is sure to make everyone laugh while learning lessons through the eyes of the sheep. 109 minutes (Shelly S.)
