Brothers Ray (Daniel Day-Lewis) and Jem (Sean Bean) lost contact when Ray took off, leaving his wife Nessa (Samantha Morton) and son Brian (Samuel Bottemly). Fortunately, mother and child were not left alone due to Jem’s generosity in taking over the responsibility for the two. The film opens with Jem walking through the forest on his way to Ray, who, for the last 20 years, has been living isolated in a small house in the woods far from society and the regular world. Jem is bringing a letter from Nessa to Ray, in which she asks him to return, emphasizing that Brian has now grown up. Ray and Jem meet more or less silently, speaking mostly in prayer, which was already a part of their childhood when they were under the influence of Pastor Rippon. The brothers, now elderly men, live in Ireland, where Ray was a member of the Irish military until he fled after an unfortunate event concerning an Irish civilian who died. Ray says, that he did not kill that man. Does Ray return to his family?
The first 15 minutes of Anemone are silent; then the conversation begins. There are at least four prayers throughout the film, providing a source of strength for the two brothers, although their experience with Pastor Rippon was not positive. There are also flashbacks of their childhood under a strict father. Ray and Jem are the featured roles, sharing the plot throughout. An anemone is a type of flower which the family plants. This is the first film to be directed by Ronan Day-Lewis and he stars his own father, long-term actor Daniel Day-Lewis, who returns here after having retired eight years ago; he also contributed to writing the screenplay with his son Ronan.
