This exhibition celebrates the 100th anniversary of the emergence of Surrealism in the 1920s by exploring parallels between and influences from 19th-century Romanticism on Surrealist artists.

This focus both capitalizes on the Kunsthalle’s exceptional collection of Romantic art and expands on themes explored in the Caspar David Friedrich show last year. Organized jointly by the Kunsthalle and the Centre Pompidou in Paris, and also traveling to Brussels, Madrid and Philadelphia, the show has garnered international loans of some of the great masterpieces of Surrealism.
