Cornelia (Rosalie Thomass) and her husband Werner (Golo Euler) are a typical family with a seven-year-old daughter, Ela (Elise Lindner). Perhaps not so “typical” for Cornelia, is the fact that they are living with her mother-in-law, Martha. Frequent visitors are her own parents. All agree that Cornelia is “too fat.” Werner blames her weight on his failure to improve in his profession, as well as receive recognition within the village.
Cornelia stands on the scales every morning. Naturally, she gains, being pregnant. Soon Ela has a baby sibling. Another problem besides weight is money—too much rather than too little. How to spend it? Some of it must go to a lawyer, due to being taken to court.
Here we have interaction between three generations of family members, all with an opinion. Elise Lindner is most excellent in the role of young girl Ela. She runs around with a camera, watches her mother eat a huge serving of ice cream, and shares news within the family. Is her mother really a “witch”? Her father Werner spends time washing dishes and taking a trip to China. There is dancing and partying, supported by four songs. In this German film the word Adipositas (adiposity) is popular, meaning “obesity.” Based on the book of the same title by Daniela Dröscher, which translates to “lies about my mother.” Filmed in Germany and partly in Italy.
