This emotional road trip begins in France, as Mathias Mlekuz, the film’s director, embarks on a journey with his best friend of two decades, Philippe Rebbot, to retrace the steps of Mathias’s late son, Youri.
A small gathering of friends and family at a picnic spot marks the beginning of this epic journey, told by a father lost in mourning and trying to find his way back to the light. He is accompanied by his best friend Philippe and the ever-loyal terrier Lucky. Together they embark on a journey through landscapes they have never dared to traverse, or at least not by bike. Through rain and shine, frost and hail, they make their way from balmy France through to Istanbul to find meaning to the sudden death of Mlekuz’s beloved son.
Mlekuz plays an authentic version of himself, questioning the cause of the tragedy he has to bear as a father. At his side, Philippe shows support and, at times, his own vulnerability towards his dear and best friend. Along the way they encounter several characters, adding to the depth of the story. There are times when both the lead actors feel like giving up, ditching their bikes, and making their way to Istanbul in a more comfortable manner. However, they persevere and it is remarkable what the outcome holds for them as a team.
Many tears are shed and although the storyline is of grief and pain, many laughs are had along the way. Auf zwei Rädernis a deep and meaningful exploration of seeking healing in the least expected of ways. (Charis H.)
