The feeling lost in space becomes a reality for Dr. Ryland Grace (Ryan Gosling) when he wakes up from a deep sleep with no memory on board the interstellar ship Hail Mary heading out to space. Unfortunately, both Officer Yáo Li-Jie (Ken Leung) and crew member Olesya Ilyukhina (Milana Vayntrub) didn’t survive leaving Grace alone on this important last-chance mission to save humanity.
This film is truly a one-man act with a background story that fills in the blanks. Gosling does a fantastic job playing a kooky middle-school science teacher who is always thinking outside the box to problem solve. When he finally meets an alien, the film really skyrockets. Both directors Christopher Miller and Phil Lord are known for their creative abilities in producing an atmospheric playground for animation; they really go to town on this project. The film is witty, thought provoking and takes us along on this seemingly crazy voyage. A film that definitely one should see. (Shelly S.)
