A beating sound echoes from a distance as we see an array of beautiful reflections in the water. Before long we see a pink dragon boat team row across the lake. The rowing team, the Küsten Pinkies from Wilhelmshaven in Northern Germany, are a group of women who have something in common. These women have all been diagnosed with breast cancer and have joined an initiative organized by the Wilhelmshavener Schwimm- und Sportverein (WSSV). These women have chosen to be part of a team of twenty-three members where they are not only fighting their cancer together, but they have come together in a positive activity as a therapeutic way to change their path in life. The film follows two teammates closely, Jasmin Eilers (age 43) and Konni Jürgens (age 70). We have an inside view of how they led their lives before and after this initiative was introduced. We see them practicing and later we see them become a competitive team and watch them compete in some very serious races. There have been studies made that regular dragon boat paddling has a positive effect on both mental and physical health after having breast cancer. This sport can help reduce the risk of lymphedema, a condition characterized by swelling and tissue fibrosis. It improves endurance and strength while creating a sense of community that is a very important aspect in the healing process. No one is alone. The cinematography is beautifully done, and it shows the importance of good health and a positive attitude to life. (Shelly S.)
