Massive solar flares have destroyed large parts of the world’s Eastern Hemisphere. Normality returns slowly. Former soldier Jake (Dave Bautista) spends his time searching for lost objects, one of which is the painting of the Mona Lisa. His main client is King August (Samuel L. Jackson). While searching, he meets up with freedom fighter, Drea (Olga Kurylenko), and they begin to work together. Their searches take them from London southwards through various towns, ending in Souilly, France. Difficulties originate with “war lord” (Kristofer Hivju) who thinks he “owns” France. Along the way they meet an encouraging pastor who hands over a map. Eventually they reach the Simserhof museum in Siersthal, France.
Jake aspires to live on his boat in peace and quiet. There is a dog named Smoke and a flight in an unsafe plane. There is an interesting yellow car, in which the driver removes the steering wheel when parking. Afterburn begins with a record player, adagio classics, and a Stradivari violin, i.e., music. This quickly changes to shooting, chasing, hunting, and most of all: exploding, all of which provides fast action, but seems to hide a possible plot. The story originates from the Afterburn series, published by Red 5 Comics. It was filmed in Hungary and Slovakia and is supported by two songs plus excellent original music by Roque Boñus. (Becky T.)
