While it doesn’t exactly reinvent the wheel, Freakier Friday is light, fun, and easy to watch. The story follows another body-swap scenario, this time involving three generations of women, which adds some fresh moments but sticks pretty closely to the original, Freaky Friday (2003).
The plot may be predictable and the emotional moments are pretty by-the-book, but honestly, that's part of the appeal. It's not trying to reinvent the genre. It just wants to entertain, and for the most part, it does, especially with standout moments from Saturday Night Live alum Vanessa Bayer, playing the psychic Madame Jen who sets the whole body swap in motion, and Chad Michael Murray, who reprises his role as the heartthrob Jake.
Jamie Lee Curtis as Tess is, once again, the best part. She's hilarious, sharp, and somehow makes even the most far-fetched scenes feel grounded. The younger cast does a decent job but it's Curtis who keeps things interesting. Just like in the first movie, she brings real energy to the screen and reminds me why I liked the original so much.
Freakier Friday isn’t anything groundbreaking, but it’s a good time if you're in the mood for something familiar and funny. (Erin H.)
