American Women's Club of Hamburg

What do French grand opera and operettas have in common?

Not a lot, it's true! But they do each have a place in the new season of the Opera Club, starting in the autumn. The new 2015/16 Spielzeit will be here before we know it!

We will be starting off with an exciting joint event with the Film Club. The new manangement at the Hamburg Staatsoper is kicking off the season with a splash - namely, a public viewing of the season premiere as part of the Binnenalster Film Festival. The opera in question is the celebrated French masterpiece "Les Troyens" by Berlioz.
Date: September 26, evenings.
Location: Jungfernstieg.

Details to follow.

Following this lively beginning, we shall commence our regularly-scheduled Opera Club project. This autumn, we will be turning our attention to opera's litlte cousin - operetta. Our featured work will be Johann Strauss' "Die Fledermaus".

Isn't that the waltz guy? What is an operetta anyhow? What are German operettas like compared to Gilbert & Sullivan, or French operetta, or Spanish zarzuela?

For answers to these questions and more, join us at Opera Club for some great music and lively discussions.

First meeting: Friday October 2, starting at 10:00.
Additional meetings: November 6 and December 4, likewise Fridays at 10:00
Performance: Tuesday, January 5, 7:00 p.m.
All meetings at Elizabeth R.'s home.

 Beginners welcome!
