SUMMARY:The English Theatre of Hamburg :THE HUNCHBACK VARIATIONS by Mickle Maher
DESCRIPTION:\n \nAn Evening Celebrating Transatlantic Friendship – Theatre, Dialogue, a
nd Community\nOn the occasion of German-American Friendship Day and in cele
bration of the long-standing\npartnership between Hamburg and Chicago, The
English Theatre of Hamburg invites you to a special\nevening of live perfor
mance, cultural exchange, and community.\nThe evening will feature the accl
aimed absurdist play THE HUNCHBACK VARIATIONS by Mickle Maher,\nintroduced
by Chicago-born director Rebecca Garron. Following the play, we will explor
e the Chicago\ntheatre scene and the legacy of absurdism in American theatr
e.\nIn the spirit of connection and collaboration, we will also hear brief
presentations from a variety of\nAmerican clubs and institutions here in Ha
mburg, highlighting the vibrant and diverse transatlantic\ncommunity in our
city.\nWe look forward to celebrating the many ways in which art, friendsh
ip, and cultural dialogue\ncontinue to bring us together.\nPunctuating the
final scene of The Cherry Orchard, Anton Chekhov wrote: “Suddenly a distant
sound\nis heard, coming as if out of the sky, like the sound of a string s
napping, slowly and sadly dying away.”\nThat one sentence — one of the grea
test stage directions in Western theatre — has baffled sound\ndesigners for
over a century.\nIn Mickle Maher’s THE HUNCHBACK VARIATIONS, the playwrigh
t has developed a deft deconstruction\nof artistic collaboration through th
e absurdist conceit of pairing two of history’s most famous deaf\nartists,
Ludwig van Beethoven and Quasimodo, the fictional bell ringer of Notre Dame
. Over 11\nscenes, or ‘variations,’ the story plays out the duo’s comical a
nd frustrating attempts to create\nChekov’s famous sound effect – one doome
d by their mutual deafness, unpleasant working\nconditions, and the fact th
at Beethoven has not yet finished reading The Cherry Orchard.\nTHE HUNCHBAC
K VARIATIONS questions the nature of music and sound, and performance in a\
nmoving and fearless meditation on collaboration and the creative process.\
nCOST;Tickets at € 25,00 are available at the theatre’s box office, by phon
 e 040/227 70 89, or online on the\ntheatre’s website:\neth-hamburg.de\n
