This is an annual international campaign that kicks off on November 25, Interna tional Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, and runs until December 10, Human Rights Day. The dates for the campaign were chosen to link violence against women and human rights and emphasize that gender-based violence against women is a violation of human rights. It was started by activists at the inaugural Women’s Global Leadership Instit ute in 1991 and continues to be coordinated each year by the Center for Wom en’s Global Leadership, Rutgers University.
In tandem, United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon’s launched the UNiTE to End Vi olence against Women campaign in 2008. < /span>UniTE is a multi-year global effort aimed at pre venting and eliminating violence against women and girls around the world.< /span>
The 2020 UNiTE Campaign Theme is < strong>"Orange the World: Fund, Respond, Prevent, Collect!". Aroun d the world a host of public events will galvanize public attention and ico nic buildings will be lit in orange, including (hopefully as in 2019) sever al landmarks in Hamburg. The color orange is a key tool unifying all activi ties to bring global attention to the initiative.
