The Ohlsdorf Cemetery was established as a n
on-denominational and multi-regional burial site outside of Hamburg in 1877
. Its first director, architect Wilhelm Cordes, transformed a treeless, san
dy plain into 92 acres of sculpted, wooded landscape. Today the cemetery ha
s an area of 966 acres with 17 km of streets that takes one to the many cha
pels, various burial sites with their striking sculptures and impressive ma
usoleums—and through the park-like landscape with ponds, trees, roses, rhod
endron bushes, and birds.

Our tou
r guide will be our AWCH member Melanie M., who grew up near the c
emetery and has promised to give us an “insider tour.” The ca. 90-min. tour
will start off with a short historical introduction to the cemetery and le
ad us to some of the thematic gravesites, including Hamburg’s Honorary Ceme
tery, the Women’s Garden, and the rose and butterfly gardens. If you are in
terested in seeing specific graves (e.g. Helmut and Loki Schmidt, Carl Hage
nbeck, Albert Balinn, Gustaf Gründgens, Ida Ehre, etc., please contact Mela
nie.)

<strong style="background-color: in
