DESCRIPTION:
Nerikomi is a Japanese ceramic technique that involves l
ayering and manipulating colored cla
ys to create intricate patterns and designs in pottery.
In thi
s method, different colored clays are stacked, folded, sliced, or pressed t
ogether before being shaped into a final form, such as a bowl, vase, or pla
te. The process allows for stunning, marbled, or mosaic-like patterns that
are visible both on the surface and throughout the body of the finished pie
ce. Once the desired design is achieved, the clay is fired in a kiln to har
den it into a durable ceramic object.
In this workshop we will use two colours to make a plate. It will look si
milar to the one in the pictures depending on the pattern and shape you mak
e and the pigment we get. This one is a butterfly pattern.
This beginn
er level workshop is suitable for everyone, no prior experience needed. The
finished pieces will take about four weeks to dry, be glazed and fired. You do need to get an old tea towel for the workshop and an apron if yo
u prefer using one. If you have one, please get a ruler too.
If you h
ave quite long nails, that might make it difficult to work on your clay pie
ce.
We will be doing this wo
rkshop at LFR. We will have some tea and water at the location.
