The House of Bern arda Alba is a masterpiece by the renowned Spanish playwright Fed erico García Lorca, delving into the depths of desire and oppression throug h an intense and emotionally charged story. The play unfolds in Southern Sp ain, within a traditional, rural setting where a widowed mother dictates th e rules of her household with an iron fist, strictly controlling her five d aughters.
"Following the death of her secon d husband, Bernarda Alba declares an eight-year mourning period, imposing a n oppressive atmosphere of sadness and isolation in the house. Directed by Katie Mitchell, an English director who does n’t speak German yet has been very successful in German theaters, this prod uction is based on Alice Birch’s new English version, which premiered at th e National Theatre, London in 2023.
