| Summertime... in Hamburg! |

On Friday, August 29th, 14 of us went to see Gershwin’s opera Porgy and Bess at the Hamburgische Staatsoper. It was a guest performance by the New York Harlem Theater in a production by Baayork Lee. We met at the Opera Cafe across from the opera house to have dinner and drinks before the show. Just before 8 PM, we all went across the street and took our seats. Most of us had not seen the opera before, but we all recognized the well-known songs like “Summertime” and “I Got Plenty o’ Nothing.” We enjoyed a very good show, a highlight for many being the moment bad-boy Crown took his shirt off, even if we could not understand every word in every song. Thank you, Kirstan, for organizing a wonderful night out for us. And thank you to the club for subsidizing this event. originally published in Currents Oct/Nov 2008 |
