Do you need help? Our Guardian Angels are the ones to call. We can help you find the markets, schools, hairdressers, doctors, dentists, how to travel by bus and trains. We are there to listen to your woes and to meet with you and have a chat over coffee. We have all been in the position of being the "new" person in town so we are ready and willing to help you. We are located in several of the neighborhoods all over the city.

Who and what are the Guardian Angels in the American Women's Club? The answer is the woman sitting next to you at a lunch or the one that lives ten minutes away from you via train.

Nancy W: “I was here in Hamburg about two years when I approached the AWC board with an idea that I had floating around in my head. I had been so very fortunate to have several friends who took me by the hand and said, ”Come on we will teach you about life in Hamburg”. These gals really saved my life. I am a Midwesterner gal who had never lived outside the USA before this trip. As you well know, we in the Midwest drive cars everyplace. We don't have good public transportation available. I had limited experience with trains and buses. My "Angels" took me shopping, showed me how to ride the bus and trains, and helped me to find items that I needed. I wanted to pass this kindness along to other newcomers to Hamburg: I wanted to help.

The AWC board acted very quickly and asked me to get the "Angel" program up and running. I asked for volunteers and so many stepped forward to help. I asked them to be available in their areas of the city to help out a newcomer. Some even volunteered to go anyplace they were needed. My goal was to match a mother with another mother who could help her find the things she needed, and members without children with one another. To date, this has worked out very well. We, as a club, have responded and helped each other to enjoy life in Hamburg."

You too can be an "Angel": all it takes is a phone call to the Membership Chair and we will put you on the list. You will find that by spending a little time to help a newcomer you will see your city through their eyes and maybe rediscover some things about Hamburg that you have long forgotten. This best part is that you will make a difference in someone's life.”
