Learning
Languages Many AWC club members have recommended leaving German language radio channels on in the background while you're working around the house. This attunes you to the sounds of the language, and you'll soon be able to understand more and more of what they're saying. Watching German language television also helps, because there are visual clues to help you understand the meaning. Also, many of your favorite American shows are dubbed into German, and you'll have fun learning to understand the familiar dialog in another language. Recommended by AWC member Nancy W. The homesite www.dwelle.de has German and World news in 29 languages. You can listen to various "radio" programs live, online. A free German language course can be downloaded to your computer. The basic course for beginners consists of 26 15-minute lessons in four series. The more advanced course, with 26 15-minute lessons, gives you practice dealing with business, development, planning, production and marketing. AWC member Jean M has compiled a list of German language schools in and around Hamburg, both private schools and city-sponsored Volkshochschule (Community Colleges). AWC member Sally D has some excellent tips on why you should bother to learn (or improve) your foreign language skills. She includes some online dictionaries and language courses as well as some tips on practising your conversation skills in online chat rooms. AWC member Sally D has compiled a generous list of internet glossaries and dictionaries to help you find just the right word or phrase in German, English, or several other languages. Member
